MAG-NZ was formed in late 2009 in direct response to the ACC levy hikes proposed by Nick Smith, Minister for ACC. Although it had a different name and a much narrower focus back then, the founding members made a commitment to continue to progress the rights of NZ motorcyclists and began working on the blueprint for the group we are today. Several very successful protest events were planned and executed and the core group of supporters were encouraged to continue to build on the idea of a group dedicated to protecting and promoting motorcycling in NZ. Many back room meetings were held as we moulded all the ideas and aspirations into a cohesive unit and a force to be reckoned with.
So, MAG-NZ has evolved from a single issue group, but it has remained faithful to its core principals of equity and fairness for our members, and to our commitment to freedom of choice and self- determination. Motorcycling is about freedom of expression, but most importantly it is about camaraderie and friendship. In a world of increasing regulation and conformity motorcycling represents one of the last bastions of individuality and diversity. This freedom of expression and individuality is not a 'given'; it has to be protected and MAG-NZ will fight to ensure it continues.
A strong focus on community underpins the group therefore fundraising and charity rides will continue to be part of what MAG-NZ is all about. Bikers are citizens of the wider community and as such can be, and are affected by changes across the board. MAG-NZ will provide a platform to protest these changes if necessary.
The decision to be politically neutral gives us the ability to take issue with any policy the government of the day might try to bring in that adversely affects us as motorcyclists. Bikers are voters and must be recognised as a powerful lobby group.
Membership of MAG-NZ is open to anyone regardless of what they ride. You don't even have to be a motorcycle owner - if you simply have "an interest" in motorcycles or things motorcycling we welcome your membership.

MAG-NZ is a politically neutral organisation with no affiliation to any political party or movement. We are about the heart and soul of biking, and no matter whether you call yourself a motorcyclist or a biker or a supporter, no matter what you ride, on road or off, MAG-NZ welcomes you to our group.
MAG-NZ is simply pro-biker and stands for anyone's right to enjoy their choice without unfair and unjust laws which interfere with that freedom.
