As the name suggests MAG-NZ is about Action.
As an organisation we are committed to upholding bikers freedoms, and resisting imposed restrictions and laws which impede those freedoms.
We will do so actively, we will not passively accept the eroding of our legal right to ride. MAG-NZ believes that bikers themselves understand, and are responsible for, the actions that are required to ensure their freedoms. We will not wait for others to do our job for us.
MAG-NZ believes there are 3 levels of action required;
- Personal;
- Local;
- National.
As an organisation MAG-NZ is committed to all three.
We also see the sense in belonging to an international group, committed to similar ideas. MAG-NZ has the support and backing of MAG-UK and will use the resources this affiliation brings to ensure we achieve our goals.
So, do not ask what MAG-NZ can do for you, rather what can you do for your fellow bikers...
HERE IS WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
ENVIRONMENT
We will encourage government and highway authorities to aim to maximise the environmental benefits of motorcycles, and not legislate against this minority group of road users. Motorcycling should be integrated in to local council transport initiatives, motorcycling reduces congestion and alleviates parking issues within city centres.Motorcycles should be cited as alternatives to the private car in the same way that walking, cycling and public transport are currently.
LEGISLATION
MAG-NZ intends to represent its members on all committees or other groups which may consider or make recommendations which may affect any code, standard or legislation which will affect any aspect of motorcycling. We will encourage members to influence their political representatives in a reasonable, informed and constructive manner.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
We oppose any attempt to make the wearing of safety or conspicuous clothing compulsory.
ROAD USER EDUCATION
MAG-NZ will encourage all authorities to improve the understanding by all classes of road user of the special considerations to be paid to motorcyclists.MAG-NZ would like to see all road users take responsibility for their actions, inattentive road users cause accidents. The "Speed Kills" message has been over done and it obviously isn't having an impact on the motoring community of NZ. It is time for a fresh approach and move towards an “appropriate for the conditions” message. Traffic fine revenue should be used for road safety initiatives, not added to the general pot.
SAFER ROADS
MAG-NZ will seek to have greater consideration given to bikers when road layouts, furniture, crash barriers and repair methods are planned. Motorcycle organisations should be automatically consulted with regards to road policy & design. One of NZTA's own road safety targets is the removal of dangerous roadside furniture; the Wire Rope Barriers have got to go.
SAFETY RESEARCH
We will oppose any motorcycling safety legislation based on shallow and flawed research. We encourage objective research into the causes of motorcycle accidents. Accurate knowledge is essential before concerned parties can introduce measures which will truly reduce the accident rate.
ACC LEVY
What we want. No discrimination against bikers for our choice of transport or leisure activity, one levy for all private motor vehicles. No fault setting of levies, a return to the Woodhouse Principles. No double dipping, one levy per person to cover every registered vehicle they own.
TOLL ROADS
MAG-NZ will support the removal of charges for motorcycles on all toll roads.
DISCRIMINATION
MAG-NZ opposes all discrimination based on unreasoned prejudice. We will oppose any discriminatory legislation or other constraint on the freedom of bikers intended solely to demonstrate that action is being taken to reduce road traffic accidents.
